It might ruin the peace and quiet of the people napping on the beach but for the riders of jet skis the buzz of the speed, the splash of the water and the flexibility of controlling your own small craft is an irresistible way to explore coastal areas and with the rider standing or sitting on, rather than inside, the craft.

Although they look simple they can be dangerous, so it’s important to make sure you know how to ride them safely.

Wearing a life jacket is as important as wearing a helmet if you are on a motorbike, and you need to stay away from other watercraft, divers, rafts and swimmers as most accidents are caused by collisions.

Each beach or lake will have its own rules about where you can and can’t drive and it is important to be aware of them. Most jet skis are designed for two or three people, though there are some models that can take four passengers. There are also some inflatable battery powered models for children.

The Royal Yachting Association accredits courses in driving a personal watercraft, and proof of having taken this is starting to be required in most UK harbours before you are able to rent a vehicle.

The course can be taken by anyone over the age of 12, and teaches high and low speed riding skills, safety information, collision avoidance and orientation at sea.
